Soft Starters

During direct-on-line starting, an asynchronous motor draws an inrush current that can be 5 to 8 times higher than the rated current. This peak puts stress on power cables, contactors, mechanical transmission components, and the distribution network—accelerating the wear of all these components and causing voltage drops that may disturb other loads connected to the same network.

The soft starter solves this problem at the source: it gradually increases the voltage applied to the motor, controlling the acceleration ramp and limiting the inrush current to manageable values. The result is a smooth start, free of mechanical jerks, with reduced wear and less impact on the grid. Unlike an inverter, the soft starter only operates during the starting and stopping phases—once the rated speed is reached, an internal bypass excludes the device, reducing power losses to zero.
